Many realistic painters claim abstraction requires no skill, that it is made up of chance and chaos.<\/p>\n<p name=\"cbe4\">But that form of thinking does true abstractionists a terrible disservice.<\/p>\n<p name=\"db03\">In order to explain why this thinking is so flawed, you must understand what true abstract painting is and the difference between a good and a bad abstract oil painting.<\/p>\n<p name=\"0652\"><em>Art, everything from <\/em><a href=\"https:\/\/evolveartist.com\/blog\/is-realistic-painting-relevant\/\" target=\"_blank\" style=\"outline: none;\" rel=\"noopener\"><em>hyper-realism<\/em><\/a><em> to full-blown abstraction, has to do with intent.&nbsp;<\/em><em>This is where quality abstract art separates itself from the masses.<\/em><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"tab-con-8\"><!--StartFragment-->Abstract Art is About Intent<!--EndFragment--><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"width: 100%;\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" alt=\"\" width=\"309\" height=\"426\" title=\"abstract-oil-painting-1\" data-id=\"3892\" src=\"https:\/\/evolveartist.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/abstract-oil-painting-1.jpg\" style=\"\" data-width=\"309\" data-height=\"426\" data-init-width=\"535\" data-init-height=\"739\"><\/span><\/p>\n<p><em>Picasso was a skilled realistic painter before he became an abstract artist. This is one of his paintings called &#8220;<em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.bcn.cat\/museupicasso\/en\/collection\/journals\/the-artist-mother\/index_en.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Portrait of the Artist&#8217;s Mother<\/a><em>.&#8221;<\/em><\/em><\/em><\/p>\n<p><!--StartFragment--><\/p>\n<p><!--StartFragment-->If you are going to paint a portrait there intention. The intent is for the painting to faithfully represent your subject in a particular way or style. There is a purpose behind every mark.<\/p>\n<p name=\"0891\" style=\"\">With abstract oil painting, a person who is just throwing paint on a canvas doesn\u2019t have intent. They are waiting to see what the result is of the mess that they\u2019re making. They hope that a portion of their experiment looks cool enough to cut out and frame.<\/p>\n<p><!--StartFragment--><\/p>\n<p style=\"\"><!--StartFragment-->True abstract artists work from a place of intent. They know what they want the painting to look like specifically. His work is not representative or derivative of anything. It is purely abstract but there are some truly concrete places in the paintings and some ephemeral areas where you can\u2019t make heads or tails of what they are. You can see through his control of <a href=\"https:\/\/evolveartist.com\/blog\/oil-paint-set\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">color<\/a> that he is specific with.<\/p>\n<p name=\"30c9\">He has a series of paintings that are colored in the same way where he utilizes warms and cools for the sake of vibration.<\/p>\n<p name=\"30c9\">Everything he\u2019s doing is for effect. Hard edges, gradients\u200a\u2014\u200athey\u2019re all there for a reason but they\u2019re not there to represent anything other than the abstract idea that he has formulated in his mind.<\/p>\n<p name=\"af61\" style=\"\">His intent is to represent what he has envisioned in his head. That vision is not necessarily connected to anything representative. It is an incredible thing to be able to do this and there aren\u2019t a lot of people who can.<\/p>\n<p name=\"73d7\">But it starts with intent. To be able to stay away from the beaten path and not produce something representative while still utilizing these tools to bring your intentions to life is an incredible challenge.<\/p>\n<p name=\"73d7\">It requires an extraordinarily well-developed mind and set of skills.<\/p>\n<p><!--EndFragment--><\/p>\n<h2 name=\"32ed\" id=\"t-1653333850656\">How to Tell Good Abstract Art from Bad?<\/h2>\n<p><!--StartFragment--><!--StartFragment-->Can you really tell a good abstract oil painting from bad? &nbsp;It\u2019s like music: you know when you\u2019re hearing noise and you know when you\u2019re hearing music. We all have personal preferences when it comes to music, but there are some musicians within certain genres who, when you hear them, you immediately feel that they have a certain mastery.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p style=\"\">\n<p>You can hear it and it\u2019s no different in art. We know when we\u2019re looking at something that was made with intent and something that was made haphazardly.<\/p>\n<p style=\"\">\n<p style=\"\"><strong><em>The issue with visual art is that there\u2019s a system in place that tells us whether it\u2019s good, rather than allowing us to decide for ourselves.<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p name=\"9060\" style=\"\"><!--EndFragment--><!--EndFragment--><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"width: 100%;\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" alt=\"\" width=\"293\" height=\"399\" title=\"abstract-oil-painting-7\" data-id=\"3898\" src=\"https:\/\/evolveartist.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/abstract-oil-painting-7.jpg\" style=\"\" data-width=\"293\" data-height=\"399\" data-init-width=\"751\" data-init-height=\"1024\"><\/span><\/p>\n<p><em><!--StartFragment--><em>\u201cAthena\u201d 48\u00d724 Oil 2017 by Rick Berry.<\/em><\/em><\/p>\n<p>Curators and collectors try to tell us what is good and bad. When you go to a restaurant, you don\u2019t need anyone to tell you whether the chef is awful. When you listen to music, you know if it\u2019s good or a mess, regardless of genre.<\/p>\n<p>But once you spend a little bit of time immersed in it, you will know what the really good stuff is compared to what you have seen and experienced for yourself.<!--EndFragment--><!--EndFragment--><!--StartFragment--><!--StartFragment-->It comes down to \u201care there components in place\u201d or is it purely random? I can show you abstract oil paintings that are similar in style; one that is random and one that is done through an understanding of the components of art-making. One of them resonates. It vibrates. It doesn\u2019t even look like it\u2019s sitting still.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p style=\"\">\n<p>The play of color, temperature and <a href=\"https:\/\/evolveartist.com\/blog\/oil-painting-for-beginners-color-oil-painting-demo\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">edge and value<\/a> make the one painting dance and come alive.<\/p>\n<p style=\"\">\n<p>This comes back to intent. Rick Berry blends abstraction with realism. He mixes traditional and digital art back and forth.<\/p>\n<p name=\"f61f\">He generates work based on intellectual impulse and emotional intent. He formulates an idea, crystallizes an intent, and then brings it to life.<\/p>\n<p name=\"ab74\">Some of the time it crystallizes in something representative and other times it doesn\u2019t.<\/p>\n<p name=\"c8a6\">Let\u2019s say Rick is painting a figure. There will be portions of the figure that are tightly designed as a figure; they are concrete and you can almost smell the sweat on the figure.<\/p>\n<p name=\"c8a6\">But the figure is not even made out of flesh\u200a\u2014\u200athey\u2019re made of bronze. And then another portion of the figure is completely abstracted and hidden under layers of the painting.<\/p>\n<p name=\"2df3\">Abstraction over <a href=\"https:\/\/evolveartist.com\/blog\/is-realistic-painting-relevant\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">realism<\/a> over abstraction over realism over who knows what.<\/p>\n<p name=\"e99c\">He\u2019s able to do it because he has complete control of the moving parts of making art. You want to draw them in. The worst thing that can happen to an artist is for somebody to walk past their art without slowing down.<\/p>\n<p name=\"ed9d\">A powerful piece of art captivates. You lose track of time standing in front of it. And you don\u2019t have to connect words to it because it\u2019s just a visual stimulation that draws you in and it engages you on emotional, visual, and tactile levels (meaning you can hear, smell, taste, and feel the painting). It doesn\u2019t have to be a realistic painting.<!--EndFragment--><!--EndFragment--><!--EndFragment--><!--EndFragment--><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"tab-con-1\">Final Thoughts on Abstract Oil Painting<\/h2>\n<p><!--StartFragment--><!--StartFragment--><!--StartFragment--><!--StartFragment--><!--StartFragment--><\/p>\n<p name=\"fcc6\">Abstract art is intentional, nuanced, and made with skills and intuition developed over time. &nbsp;Realism can help to develop these skills, and they are honed over years of practice, success, and failures.
